We Can’t Do It All On Our Own

As we begin to explore this idea of “keeping in step with the Spirit,” it is important that we remind ourselves of the truth that forms the foundation of our faith: we cannot do it in our own power. Westerners especially dislike this idea. Surrounded by idioms like “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” and “self-made man,” we build our existence on the idea of self. “I can do it!” We read our children books like The Little Engine That Could and are then surprised when they have trouble asking for help. Yet, as we focus on our relationship with Christ, we must lay this notion at his feet.
