Characters in movies and sitcoms can help us understand what being different looks like. The crowd around them are going one way, and they go another, or they react and believe differently from the rest of the crowd around them. The characters Luna Lovegood and Hermione Grainger from the Harry Potter stories are both labeled as different by others, but they also think and feel differently in how they view others, what they value, and what they’re committed to. Or think of Leslie Knope, from Parks and Recreation, whose determination and conviction to the values of local government stood out from others around her who didn’t care at all.
