Mike Howerton tells a story about how grace works. He recounts the time that he received a second ticket in two years for expired car tags. He went to the court and told the judge, “I throw myself on the mercy of the court!” Impressed by him—or perhaps, amused—the judge waived the penalty of his expired car tags. Like that judge, God waives the penalty for all those who throw themselves upon his mercy (Mike Howerton, Glorious Mess (Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 2012), excerpted in “The God of Second Chances,” Family Life, https://www.familylife.com/articles/topics/faith/essentials-faith/growing-in-your-faith/the-god-of-second-chances/).
